Actor Jesse Williams received the humanitarian award at the BET Awards but that’s not what people are talking, his speech made touchy waves all over the world. The actor spoke on racial issues, social justice and cultural appropriation and received a thunderous applause from the audience.
Jesse, who is an active supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, also lifted women in his speech, which saw him trend on social media, with millions of people praising him for his bravery. His inspiring speech has since gone viral, yielding more than 1 million Google searches in less than 24 hours.
His speech resonated with many black people all over the world, pointing out struggles of black people, Jesse said: “We’ve been floating this country on credit for centuries, and we’re done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight and out of mind while extracting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil -black gold - ghettoizing and demeaning our creations and stealing them, gentrifying our genius and then trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of strange fruit.
Shutting down those who are quick to criticise, he said: “If you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do.”
