One-on-One with Emtee

BET Awards Viewer’s Choice: Best International Act award nominee Emtee is transforming the Hip Hop scene in Mzansi by scoring prestigious awards from long standing rappers. Emtee informally known as Mthembeni Ndevu hails from Matatiele but grew up in Jo’burg where he got introduced to Hip Hop.
When did you fall in love with Hip Hop?
“I fell in love with rap when I was in primary school. At that age, I only did cover songs imitating my favourite rappers. Towards the end of primary school I moved to Jo’burg that’s when I started writing my own music, nothing hectic but I loved the fact that it was my own words.”
What has been the highlight of your career thus far?
“My biggest highlight would be the awards that I’ve collected. Awards are a confirmation that I’m doing a great job, and the feeling I get when I’m standing on that podium it is just priceless.”
Who did you gain your musical inspiration from?
“I don’t have a specific person who I look up to, but I would like to be a diverse performer like Will Smith and not be limited to just music.”
He sure has started making a move in that direction as he recently made his debut in a local TV series Muvhango.
What do you have to say to people who have negative connotations about rap music?
“Rap music is not for the rebellious youth, but it can be a tool to voice out social issues. I want to change the game and make rap something that resonates with parents in the way that they would allow their kids to pursue it as a career. Hip hop is misunderstood by parents in SA.”
Why Avery for your first album title?
“Avery is my son’s name. I want to leave a legacy for him because he’s changed my life for the better. He has taught me to be more responsible, now I watch how I act because of him.”
Where to from here?
“I want to see my music move to other parts of the world. I know that I can achieve that by collaborating with artists from other countries. The first one that I would like to work with is Tory Lanez.”
Emtee is nominated for a Viewer’s Choice: Best International Act award at the 2016 BET Awards. If you want to vote for him, follow Bet_Africa for more instructions and information.
