Sports and Gospel stars honoured

What does runner Wayde van Niekerk and gospel singer Dr Tumi have in common? They both came out on top in their respective fields last night. The South African Sports Awards honoured the country's best athletes in Bloemfontein while the Crown Gospel Awards also took place on the same night.

Record breaking Van Niekerk received multiple awards including Sports Star of the Year, People's Choice and Sportsman of the Year. His fellow sportswoman and gold medallist Caster Semenya, who was recently awarded the BET A-List Sportswoman of the Year was again awarded the Sportswoman of the Year.

Van Niekerk and Semenya were among five other athletes to receive International Achievement trophies.

"It's such an honour for me to say I'm South African, and I'm so proud to do it each and every time I step on the track," Van Niekerk said in his acceptance speech. Caster however, addressed those who attack her about her sexuality.
In Durban, at the Crown Gospel Awards Dr Tumi went home with six awards out of nine nomination including Best Gospel Song and Best Gospel Artist.
Other big winners included Khaya Mthethwa, who took home Best Gospel DVD and Best Gospel Contemporary. The late gospel music legend Vuyo Mokoena was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
