It is only the first month in the year but South Africans have bid farewell to a few of their beloved stars.
Veteran actor Sandy Mokwena has died at age 68.
The actor, well known for his character Bra Eddie on e.tv soapie Scandal passed away Wednesday night in hospital from natural causes. According to e.tvMokwena was admitted earlier in the week.
Born 26 July 1946, Mokwena started his career in the entertainment industry in the early 1970s. He was fluent in five South African languages and his love for acting started on the theatre stage. He made his breakthrough when he embarked on a world tour with the cast of the musical "Ipi Tombi". He played Cappie the narrator in the play which toured around the world.
He also appeared in numerous South African shows including Soul City, Khululeka, Homeland, Yizo Yizo, Zero Tolerance, Dwaalspoor, Generations, Justice for All and Zero Tolerance. He also acted in a number of films including The Principal, Tutus and theAmazing Jewel, Wheels and Deals and Taxi to Soweto. The news of Mokwena’s death comes two days after legendary trumpeter Hugh Masekela passed away.
Minister of Arts and Culture, Nathi Mthethwa joined fans,friends and colleagues in paying tribute to Mokwena on social media.
