25 May is celebrated across the continent as Africa Day and marks the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963. In 2002, the name OAU was changed and it became the African Union (AU). Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is currently the Chairperson of the African Union. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Building a better Africa and a better world”.
“Africans… They are tired. They’re tired of being the subject of everybody’s charity and care. We are grateful, but we know that we can take charge of our own destinies if we have the will to reform.” Dlamini-Zuma said.
In celebration of the 53 years of the AU, many celebrities joined in on social media to share the beauty of Africa.
