Music Moguls featuring Snoop Dogg, Damon Dash, Jermaine Dupree and Birdman has just hit premiered, so let's take the oppportunity to check out music moguls doing great things in Nigeria.
The Nigerian entertainment industry is one of the fastest growing industries in Africa and has produced a number of artists who are respected all over the world. The industry is relatively new compared to other parts of the world but it is rapidly growing, catching up in music, fashion and film.
We take a look at five fast growing Record labels in Nigeria and the people behind them who are slowly becoming Africa’s Music Moguls.
Mavin Records by Don Jazzy
Mavin Records is a record label founded by recording artist and record producer Don Jazzy in 2012. The label was founded following the closure of Mo' Hits Records, which was owned by the Don Jazzy and D'banj. The label is home to artists such as Tiwa Savage, Dr SID, D'Prince, Di'Ja, Reekado Banks and Korede Bello. The label also houses a roster of producers such as Jazzy himself, Altims and Baby Fresh. Mavin Records has also partnered with Sony Music on some of their artists such as Tiwa Savage, who recently signed a deal with the New York base label for distribution purposes.
DBanj Records by DBanj
After Mo' Hits Records went under, same as Don Jazzy, DBanj started his own record label, Dbanj Records, focusing on the entertainment industry as a whole. The company is an integrated music and entertainment service provider, with a key focus on Record Label businesses (Artiste Management, Content Origination and Distribution) and general entertainment. With his experience and expertise, DBanj is building an empire alongside Kay Switch, Jay Sleek, Dee Vee and Jsoul. D'Banj, Kay Switch and 2kris are the artists currently signed under the label.
Empire Mates Entertainment by Banky W
Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E) was founded by musician Banky W in 2002. The label is home to recording artists such as Shaydee, Niyola and Banky W. The stable also houses a number of producers such as Masterkraft, Jay Sleek, Spellz and Samklef, among others. Proving to be a mogul in his own rights, Banky W partnered with Segun Demuren and Tunde Demuren and established a production house, a publishing company known as Muzik Men Publishing, and a charity foundation known as the I-AM-CAPABLE Charity Foundation. EME was once home to award-winning artist Wizkid until they parted in 2014 following the end of his contract term.
StarBoy Records by Wizkid
Wizkid has been taking the industry by storm and it was about time that this power house musician started his own label. He's gained major international fame and collaborated with international artists while also collecting a lot of accolades in just a few years. He started the record label in 2015 after leaving EME. Wizkid's aim is to expand his label outside of Nigeria. He has recently done so by signing three Ghanaian-based acts: R2bees, Efya, and Mr Eazi. He hopes that signing these artists will help bring the Nigerian and Ghanaian music industries closer together and unite the West African music scene. This is the first step in expanding the label throughout Africa. Ultimately, Wizkid aims to conquer the world.
Super Cool Cats by Ice Prince
Ice Price started his record label Super Cool Cats after being with Chocolate City for more than five years. Before he left Chocolate City Records in 2015, Ice Prince was named the new vice chairman of label. It came as a surprise when he announced that he will be starting his own label in the beginning of this year. Ice Prince will still work closely with Chocolate City as his label is an imprint of Chocolate City. According to Ice Prince Super Cool Cats is beyond a music label, is a full platform for different expressions of the arts. He is working with fashion designers, video directors and other personnel in the entertainment industry.
