“Happiness is a Four Letter Word” film which broke records by being the most supported “black production” at cinemas received two nominations at this year’s South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).
The film received two nods, with Renate Stuurman being nominated for Best Supporting Actress in feature film and another one for the Make-Up and Hair crew.
SAFTAs announced this year’s leading TV and film personalities and productions in Braynston, north of Johannesburg.
The event, hosted by seasoned actress Nambitha Mpumlwana, saw SA film industry players gathered to see if their work has been noticed. The SAFTAs announced 258 nominees in over 89 categories such as Best Feature Film, Best Student Film, Best Youth Programme, Best Talk Show Host, Best Music Show and many more.
“MTV Base Meets Bill Gates” is vying for the Best Youth Programme and is up against “100 Youth” and “Craz-e Sistahood”.
Competing in the Best TV Presenter category are Tumi Morake, Tembisa Mdoda, Masetshaba Ndlovu and Lawrence Maleka. Tumisho Masha is up against the talented Warren Masemola in the Best Supporting Actor - TV Drama category, while Brenda Ngxoli and Linda Sokhulu will be competing in the Best Actress – TV Drama.
Masemola received another nod in the Best Supporting Actor - TV Soap/Telenovela category.
Speaking to BET Africa after the announcement, Jerry Mofokeng who is nominated in the Best Actor - TV Drama, was surprised by his nomination. He said the trick in this industry is to never think that you have arrived.
“My challenge to the young actors is that they should always remain professional in everything they do. It doesn’t matter whether it’s entry level or legacy level, remain ever fresh and do your homework and let your work speak for you. I’m excited for the nomination even if I don’t win,” he said.
Actor Luthuli Dlamini, who is part of the judging panel, said the nomination list represent diversity and the industry is growing, producing better, quality projects.
“All nominees are well deserving and have put much needed work in their crafts and it was difficult to single out who to select,” Dlamini told BET Africa.
The SAFTAs 11, themed “SA’s got it – let’s Celebrate it” main award ceremony will take place in Sun City, North West on 18 March 2017.
Lifestyle coffee brand, McCafe, has continued its sponsorship of the SAFTAs this year, sponsoring two categories; Best Actor in a Feature Film and Best Actor in a Feature Film. "For us it’s about acknowledging and celebrating talent that represents the exceptional creativity and future of the SA film and televison industry,” said Daniel Padiachy from McDonald’s.
